Question Cardio on Bulk...Adjustments?

Hey, quick question bros. I have been doing a bulk for the last month or so, consisting of full body workouts every three days and getting around 4000cals a day (I weigh 200lbs). Gains have been really good so far...The first day I lift, the second day I do cardio of some sort, the third day nothing. Well, with this great muscle gain has finally come some noticeable fat on the belly I've been doing about 10 min of INTENSE cardio, aiming to get ~180bpm on the 2nd day of the routine. Any thoughts on this? I played hockey for 10 years but don't know a whole lot about cardio in relation to bodybuilding. Part of me thinks it will just burn some of the food im taking in, but on the other hand im guessing it does a bunch of physiological shit that helps keep me lean. Tis the season, but I can't afford to look like Santa. Thoughts?

My experience is to use cardio to ramp up the metabolism; kicking ass cardio-wise at say, 130 to 140 bpm for 40 minutes to get the body cooking. My sense is the quick megadose of activity you are subjecting yourself to is more of a singular event for the body to deal with, kinda overwhelming, rather than a mechanism to bring your basil metabolism up so you are constantly more of a calorie burner.

The formula is something like 220 minus your age in years times .75 to get your ideal fat cooking heart rate.

I always did it on an empty stomach on my off lifting days, my readings have said to do the protein shake prior to the cardio- which for me is a good hour+ before, cardio just doesn't go with my full stomach. My totally hungry workouts burnt more fat, sure, but I was totally catabolic at that point- "jeez, why aint I growing"- I'm making better gains now.

If you are keeping up with your eating one session am and one pm could work for you- see how this feels, be conscious of the late sessions ability to keep your body from wanting sleep.

I'm doing cardio 3 days a week right now, holding my own, looking into really pouring it on shortly after New Years for twenty weeks or so, lots of food training cardio and rest.

Good training to you Condor

Read the bulking primer bro.

I always do cardio.especially while on a bulker.Mind you it is less intense but i still do it.Doing cardio first thing in the morning will rev up your metabolisom and keep you MORE hungry ALL day.Plus while ingesting ALL those extra cals it is important to keep your heart and lungs healthy.think about it.You are gaining weight daily as well as fat mass.Your heart and lungs need to be kept healthy to deal with all thses extras that are being put on your body.

trust me bro cardio is always a good idea.just be smart and customize it based on what season you are in

Thanks for the info Marx & Kartel...I'm going to make an effot to do that cardio in the morning before work, and for a longer duration than my insane 10min burst. Will keep you updated, thanks again.

I'm going to start doing some wind sprints, because a) They supposedly stimulate GH production and b) I like pain in intense, smaller intervals (lifting) as opposed to something like long distance running. I'll report back on how it goes, see how we could use some bodybuilding related posts.

My new job has been a big adjustment so my lifting schedule has needed to conform; I've lost a 2-3lbs but nothing too serious, and I was starting to get a little "jolly" around the mid section so I'm not that worried. Hanging around 200lbs right now, still bulking but changing up the routine, as the last one added about 15lbs over a month and a half and then tappered off. I'd like to know how everyone elses workouts are going in the midst of the holidays and all...Lets see some posts!

Really productive workouts- time taken off for xmas travel, but keeping strong, good gym gains. "Jolly around the middle" yup, that fits me...

Kicking ass though! Loving it...

Agree with the above regarding jetting the metabolism at the start of the day on an empty stomach. The goal of doing it this way is to ensure that you burn off the glacogen stores quickly so you can move to your fat stores for energy.
