I do most my stretching while I'm lifting and in between lifts. Before my training I usually do a quick light stretch and into drills/technique. By the time I'm done with those i am fully stretched.
Before competition /fight I stretch a little, but again i drill things and that usually gets me limber, warm and ready to go. Grappling definitely keeps you stretched and flexible.

Stretching for me improves my speed and actually decreases my risk of pulling a muscle. Stretching I found through studies and own use helps in recovering the muscles after a long hard workout. Being on cycle and gaining 30+ lbs in 48 days has defiantly hit home on my flexibility side. And my speed has suffered from it. I have recently enrolled in a Yoga class 3x a week to improve my flexibility which will improve my balance and my lateral movements.
You have to remember your legs. shoulders, etc. are hinged in sockets. Your hips are a socket, and by walking daily or even squating or bending over you are working them front to back and limbering that range of motion. Yet how often are you doing quick LATERAL movements in your workout, unless your doing side lunges. And in football, or even MMA a quick side step, shuffle, etc. is key to avoiding a tackle or a blow. The only way to target the lateral movement of these hinged joints is in various yoga postures/stretches. I did ju-jitsu for 2-3 years and the flexibility I gained from doing it directly transfered to football and my lateral cuts/footspeed increased, as well as an injury preventive. Let me know what you think, it was an interesting read, but I just don't believe to much of what they were saying. -O |

Good post bro...I do agree with you. I do find the read above interesting and have a few friends who believe this way, but I just don't see it that way. I found stretching to be critical for me. i completely agree with you.

I wake up every morning and do a 30 min stretch and abb routine, it has made my back injury go away almost.. and makes me feel like a million bucks every morning..I coud not disagree with that article more, when you ligaments and tendons are tightened from muscle mass gain or ristriction of movement then your range of motion decreases, if your range decreases when you reach the limit of your range this is when tears happen... increase your range and you decrease the poss. of a tear, this is one of the most frequent injuries athletes suffer from, your whole body from your feet to your neck, how many wrestlers/ football, baseball, etc. out there did not have warm up stretching before every practice???...my .00002 FIT

I stretch like a mother fucker. But, being an athlete, I have to. When I used to go about 250 or so, I never really stretched, of course, I tried to avoid going up stairs and things like that, too.
